30 Sep 2026 ↑ Science Department in collaboration with the NSS Department, organized a Workshop cum Awareness Session on Sustainable Solid Waste Management and Vermicomposting on dated 30.9.2026, under the able guidance of Principal Dr. Sarla Nirankari and the supervision of Prof. Sunita Verma (HOD, Science Department, NSS program officer), as per the directions received from the Assistant Director, College Education, SAS Nagar, Mohali, and in compliance with the orders of the Hon'ble Supreme Court regarding environment protection.

The resource person for the day was Dr. Astha Bhatia, Assistant Professor, Department of Botanical and Environmental Sciences, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar.Dr. Astha Bhatia delivered an insightful lecture on sustainable solid waste management. She enlightened the students on crucial topics like Sustainable Solid Waste Management, the Principles of Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Recycle, Recover and Dispose (6Rs). She also threw light on E-Waste Handling and Segregation, and Community Action for a clean environment. She emphasized the importance of waste segregation at source and responsible e-waste disposal.A special hands-on session on Vermicomposting was also conducted. Dr. Astha Bhatia explained the process of converting organic kitchen waste and biodegradable waste into nutrient-rich vermicompost using earthworms (Eisenia fetida). She demonstrated the method of pit preparation, maintenance of moisture and temperature, and harvesting of compost, encouraging students to adopt it in their homes and college campus as a sustainable waste management practice. She also explained the different criteria required for composting and vermicomposting.Dr.Astha Bhatia also sensitized the students about the importance of Green Campus Audit and Energy Audit. She explained how Campus Audit helps in assessing the overall cleanliness, greenery, waste management systems and environmental sustainability of the institution, while Energy Audit helps in monitoring energy consumption, identifying energy wastage and promoting the use of energy-efficient practices and renewable energy sources for a sustainable campus.Principal Dr. Sarla Nirankari appreciated the efforts of the Science and NSS Departments. She motivated students to adopt eco-friendly habits in daily life for a greener future.The session concluded with a vote of thanks and a pledge to keep the campus and surroundings clean and green. Principal madam welcomed and honored the resource person by presenting a plant pot and the insignia of the college.The grace of the event was enhanced by the presence of esteemed faculty members Prof. Sunita Verma, Dr. Parveen Saini, Mrs. Pallavi, Dr. Pallavi, Ms. VishvPreet, Er.
